While cork wallpaper is higher-priced than other kinds of wallpapers, it is a natural covering that never loses its ability to emphasize a room’s décor and beauty. Cork, which is the epitome of sustainability, is processed from a cork oak tree’s bark. The bark regenerates about every decade.
When it is used as a wallcovering, cork is processed into a paper or substrate that is finished with lacquer. The surface texture of the bark material is variegated and resistant to rot or mildew. Because cork is highly permeable, the material provides some degree of resistance to sound. A cork wallpaper features insulating properties as well.
In addition to wallpaper made of cork, we at Wolf-Gordon proudly feature corks that are used for bulletin boards and upholstery fabrics – all of which are of a premium quality. We have always taken an interest in providing wallpapers and wall coverings that emphasize uniqueness and durability. That is why we would never think of not including cork in our line of premium wall coverings and upholstery materials.
How Cork is processed
Cork itself is considered a heterogeneous structure. Therefore, the texture of cork wallpaper can either be rough or smooth. Before it is used as a finishing material for wallcoverings, the cork oak’s bark is crushed or cut, then applied as a wood veneer to paper. The wood is then pre-coated with a neutral or colored lacquer.
A Quieter and Healthier Environment
Besides being resistant to sound, cork wallpaper, as indicated, keeps your cooling or heating costs low. Cork absorbs sounds, heat, and odors and also possesses antibacterial properties. If you install cork wallpaper in a high-humidity room, such as a bath or kitchen, try to use a wallpaper with a coating that is waxier.
Happily the care of cork wallpaper is not difficult or laborious in any way. We at Wolf-Gordon make sure that the wallpaper can easily be maintained. Simply clean the surface with a damp sponge or vacuum. Never wash cork with detergents. If you do note spots on the surface, then use a very fine sandpaper to rub them away.
When it comes to installation, the wallpaper can be glued on any kind of surface, even if the surface area is already coated with an acrylic or oil paint. Therefore, you don’t have to go to a lot of trouble to prepare the surface. As long as the wall is dry and clean, application is easy.
That’s why we here at Wolf-Gordon are excited to include cork wallpaper among our fine line of wall coverings. Not only is the wallpaper a sustainable product, it offers a variety of benefits. Easy to maintain and clean, the covering provides sound resistance and energy savings benefits too.
