When your thermostat malfunctions, this can cause your furnace to stop producing heat. Below, you’ll learn about common thermostat problems and when you need to contact a technician who specializes in Thermostat Repair and replacement.

Blown Fuse

When your furnace stops working, first check your circuit breaker box to make sure that you don’t have a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. This fix is very simple and you’ll quickly have your furnace running again.

Dead Battery

If you have a digital thermostat, replace the old battery with a new one to see if this resolves the issue. You should regularly change the battery in your thermostat once every year so that it will continue to function.

Dirt Build up

The small components on the inside of your thermostat can collect dust and debris, which may cause it to stop working. Remove the cover from your thermostat and carefully clean off the dirt. Use a small soft brush or compressed air to thoroughly remove all the debris. After cleaning, replace the cover and test the thermostat to see if this has solved the problem.

Loose Wiring

If cleaning didn’t help, there may be a loose wire inside of your thermostat. Turn off the electric power to the thermostat and remove the cover plate. Use a screwdriver to take out the screws that connect the device to the wall. Examine the wiring system on your thermostat and look for any loose connections or frayed wires. Tighten up the connections and repair the wires by cutting off the frayed ends, stripping off 1/2 inch of insulation and reconnecting the wires.

If your thermostat still isn’t working after you’ve checked all of the common issues, contact a technician who specializes in Thermostat Repair. The technician can examine your thermostat, diagnose the problem, and fix it for you. If your thermostat is old and worn out, the technician will have to replace it with a new one.
