As we enter and exit the millions of buildings on our little planet we rarely consider what’s actually going on inside them. Not the hustle and bustle of the people, but the real goings on underneath all that pretty brick, stone and wood. Beneath these walls and floors is a vast network of electrical wiring and an assortment of plumbing pipes and connectors designed simply to assist you in enjoying life. Consider the plumbing in your home. Without it you would have to use an outhouse for nature’s calls and a tub and washboard to clean your clothes. This alone would make life very difficult.

The plumbing in your home handles two types of liquids. The main inlet covers cold, fresh water fit for human consumption. This water is used for cooking, cleaning and bathing. After it enters the home the cold water line branches off and one line goes to the water heater for readily available hot water. The other will run to various faucets such as the kitchen sink, bathroom tubs, toilets and showers and at least one outside tap for lawn purposes. In some cases these lines are hidden in walls or beneath the floors requiring a Plumber skilled in leak detection for locating potential problems.

The other side of the plumbing situation are the drain and sewage lines. Any Plumber will tell you that these are often the most troublesome plumbing lines in the home. Drain lines tend to clog easily and sewer lines can back-up if they aren’t cleaned regularly. In fact, many of the house calls a plumber will make are related to clogged lines. Generally, the lines cleared by using a rooter tool, sometimes known as a pipe snake, to pierce the clog. Once the hole is open the water flow should wash the rest of the clog away.
